Paediatric Bushfire Support Service (PBSS)

The newly established Paediatric Bushfire Support Service (PBSS) provides support for children and their families affected by the February 2009 bushfires. This program will run until July 2011.

MCHS recognises the challenges facing the region and the effect this will have on the health and wellbeing of the communities of Mitchell and Murrindindi, especially the impact of the February 2009 bushfires.

MCHS is pleased to be able to offer a program funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to children aged from 0 - 8 years which provides continuity of support as children make the sometimes stressful and difficult transition to primary school.

Support for children is an integral feature of our service provision involving a range of allied health professionals.

Allied health and counsellors provided as part of the Paediatric Bushfire Support Service (PBSS) includes the following services and programs:

        • Counselling 
        • Speech Pathology 
        • Physiotherapy 
        • Occupational Therapy 
        • Dietary Advice

Key Features

The key features of the Paediatric Bushfire Support Service (PBSS) include: 
        • Self referral 
        • Continuity of support services 
        • For children aged 0 - 8 years 
        • Allied health and counselling support continues as children commence schooling 
        • Staff travel as required to support children in their natural environment, 
                eg: child care centre, preschool, primary school and the family home 
        • The service is available to bushfire affected children from the Shires of Mitchell and Murrindindi.
